If you like hunting dogs . . .

While waiting to run my dogs in training sessions this summer I filled the time gap taking pictures (or trying to) and put them on my personal site http://kayolson.com

We are involved in Ducks Unlimited work to protect fly ways, and the conservation of wetlands and waterfowl.

Happy Holidays 2008

The holiday season is here again, seemingly much faster every year! We’re looking forward to spending Christmas in MD with our grandchildren who are getting bigger faster but each one with a great personality (I think largely due to their parents).

We made our yearly trip to FL this year and were joined by John and family for a visit after they toured Disney. FL was in the middle of a drought, but sure enough, it rained while they were with us – however, they hadn’t seen TV for 4 days, so watching it in the bedroom was a novelty. Since the boys are getting bigger, the RV was a bit “cozier” this year. . .

Everybody was here for a long weekend this
summer and we had nice beach days – kids played, ladies read (my daughter and daughter-in-law will probably be outraged at the picture) and Dave provided chauffer service so we didn't have to lug everything on foot.

In June Gordie, who is a half brother to Sully, joined the pack. He promises to be quite a large dog with much enthusiasm but friendly and lovable (when not chewing on household items which he manages to retrieve quickly when a closet door is opened). Right now he is a certified felon, thief and sleuth which probably qualifies him to be a good hunter. Sully got his Senior Hunt title in 4 straight passes this summer and is on to Master Hunt next year. It might be a very long summer as we've seen some strange judging at the Master's level, but we'll give it our best shot.

The only sad note is that we lost our dear Maggie in September in an accident in Canada. Ginger got some cuts and bruises, but recovered quickly. We trained both all summer and Maggie was healthy and moving like a puppy, so we figured she had quite a few more good years.

Gordie is starting his training for Junior Hunt this summer, so we juggle time trying to keep all dogs at their respective activity levels. Ginger at 9+ has as much energy as the younger ones and people are amazed when they find out her age.

We hope everybody in the class of '56 has a wonderful holiday season and the new year brings good things.

Sandra Ward

I haven't called myself Sandy since trotting off to college. So if you want to surprise me, call me Sandy when you contact me and I'll know you are an old friend from Olmsted Falls. For the past 10 years my husband, Ron Mann, and I have been living in Guanajuato, the capital city of a central Mexican state with the same name. Here I keep busy--that's an understatement--running a humane society. If you want to know about it, go to our website, www.amigosanimalesgto.org or write to me and ask to be put on the mailing list of our newsletter. The December issue is just about ready to go out. In my spare time I occasionally edit books in the field of population for former colleagues.

Before moving to Mexico, Ron and I lived on Oahu, in Hawaii. For 26 years I headed a publication program for the Population Institute at the East-West Center, a federally funded education center focusing on Asia and the Pacific that's located on the campus of the University of Hawaii. Before that I worked in New York City, first for the organization CARE and then for the Population Council, a research and technical-assistance foundation established by the Rockefellers. So in a sense I'm still working in the population field because our humane society does a lot of spays and neuters.

Ron and I really enjoy living in our beautiful colonial city, which reminds us a lot of Europe. It's a Unesco-designated World Heritage Site and a vibrant music and arts center. We have a superb symphony orchestra, numerous chamber-music groups, museums, and an annual international performing arts festival in October. Our home is a sprawling Mexican house, bright pink, with a guest house on the property. We have two goofy dogs that are rescues, of course. Our Spanish is not fluent, but we manage, and our circle of Mexican friends is growing along with that of the expatriate community. Until recently my mother was living here too, but she broke her hip in July and it became evident that, at 98, she could no longer manage on her own. So she is now settled in Westlake Village, near my sister Pat.

Once a year Ron and I travel somewhere else, in August to southern Africa and in recent years to Vietnam and Cambodia, Morocco, Costa Rica, Turkey, and western Europe. We were thinking of going to India next but are waiting to see whether that's still a good idea, given the atrocities in Mumbai this past week.

I hope to hear from some of you and catch up on your lives. I hope you are all well and happy.

Sandra

C'mon Guys!

I need news, I need pictures! Carol Hall ('57) was kind enough to part with a yearbook, so I'm set on that now.

Set up and ready

In haste I set up this page for ready access. I haven't had time to develop a new template, so I can use some input regarding colors, etc.

Here is a link to a page which contains information about images, etc., that some may find helpful. Here is a link specific to scanning. As I mentioned to Minna, if you think a photo can be improved, don't work on it - just email the original - (that goes for any type of enhancement, including sharpening, cloning, resizing etc.) Most digital cameras save images in JPEG format and anytime you edit an image in JPEG format, data is lost.

My thought was to set up the website page with list items for a photogallery for the 50th reunion and one for other pictures plus some other items like news, etc.

Since this is a blog, anyone can leave comments or post something new, trade thoughts and ideas - whatever.

There is a temporary page set up here. (http://ofhsclassof56.com)

I'll put the address for this blog on the page as well.
